Russian Android users may soon face problems, says Anton Gorelkin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy. He spoke about this on his Telegram channel.

According to Gorelkin, most of Google’s cache servers, which are located on the sites of telecom operators in Russia, require updating. However, they cannot be updated, since the corporation has formally left the country and US sanctions do not allow it to work with Russian counterparties.
“Sooner or later all this equipment will simply stop working. And here what worries me most is not YouTube, but the stability of the Android operating system, which also depends heavily on these servers,” the MP said.
He also said that he consulted with experts who explained that the situation with different YouTube speeds on mobile networks and cable Internet providers can be explained by a combination of several factors. These include not only different network bandwidths and insufficient computing power of Google servers, but also different corporate policies regarding access to mobile and browser versions of the video hosting.
Internet providers that use technologies to bypass website access restrictions and do not heed the regulator’s requirements may lose their licenses, Roskomnadzor warned in early September.
