A study in the UK, where businesses changed half-pint portion sizes to two-thirds of their previous size, showed a significant decrease in the volume of beer sold, while some locations saw a slight increase in wine sales.
Although less than 1% of businesses participated in the study, the results suggest a potential “policy tool” to reduce alcohol consumption. Smaller portion sizes could help reduce health problems associated with alcohol consumption, including the risk of seven types of cancer, the scientists write.
More research is needed to determine whether reducing beer consumption leads to increased consumption of other alcoholic beverages.
