Before the advent of smartphones, the R3EQ used DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-Frequency) signals generated by pressing buttons on your mobile device to control the radio receiver using a DTMF decoder connected to a microcontroller.
This used a DTMF decoder base board and an ATmega8 microcontroller, which translates DTMF signals into CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) commands. This allowed the R3EQ to tune frequencies and switch modes without physically being at the radio station. Its system requires a mobile phone to be set up as an answering machine, allowing it to communicate via radio by dialing a number remotely.
Although the concept had its limitations, such as the lack of real-time feedback when executing commands, it still seemed interesting.
