This is an Android downloader; it downloads and executes other malicious components on an infected smartphone.
“As part of this malicious campaign, Kaspersky Lab solutions detected Necro attacks on users in Russia, Brazil, Vietnam, Ecuador and Mexico,” the company says.
The virus can download modules to the phone that will display and click ads, redirect Internet traffic, open arbitrary links in WebView, and much more. An infected smartphone is often used to visit prohibited resources and as part of a proxy botnet.
Initially, the virus was found in the unofficial Spotify Plus app, a modified version of WhatsApp, mods for the games Minecraft, Stumble Guys, Car Parking Multiplayer. But it is also found in many others.
This is not the first time Kaspersky Lab has identified Necro; it became known in 2019. They remind you that downloading apps from official stores does not always protect your phone from malware infections.
In August, Kaspersky Lab specialists discovered a Trojan that attackers have been using to spy on their victims since mid-2021. It had access to instant messenger messages, contacts, and could record the screen.
