The investigation began in 2019 when the corporation notified the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) that it was storing some user passwords unencrypted.

According to Meta, the company quickly took steps to eliminate the bug as soon as it was identified. During the investigation it was established that third parties did not have access to user data.

To date, regulators have fined Meta a total of €2.5 billion for violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into effect in 2018. In 2023, the company received a record fine of €1.2 billion. of euros, which he is still trying to challenge.
