At X5, as in retail in general, staff shortages have been observed for a long time, writes Kommersant. Representatives of the Association of Retail Trade Companies consider that the current situation of work in the sector is a true crisis: “probably the worst in the last 20 years.”
The growth of X5’s business causes a shortage of employees, even with around 392 thousand people employed in the networks. The staff is still unable to service a large number of parquet floors.
The retailer aims to solve the staffing problem through robotization. And to do this, it plans to expand the practice of investing in technology. In 2023, according to Kommersant, X5 will invest more than 12.5 billion rubles in innovation.
“Retailers have few options to solve the problem other than investing in workflow automation. Retailers are faced with the task of transferring processes on the sales floor to the buyer as much as possible,” Kommersant quotes Olga Sumishevskaya, market expert and partner at the consulting firm One Story.
He stressed that the situation with personnel will not change in the near future, so it is logical that other networks are working on digitalization and robotization. For example, Magnit plans to install 27,000 new self-service cash registers by the end of the year.
