The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has proposed to prohibit retail chains from charging fees to egg suppliers (normally around 5% of the total supply), writes Izvestia citing agency documents. According to the service’s calculations, in this case retailers will lose about 100 billion rubles over the next six years.

The introduction of the new standard is scheduled for March 1, 2025; It is necessary to stabilize prices, the FAS said. According to market participants surveyed by the publication, the measure will likely lead to an imbalance in competition between manufacturers.

The restriction will affect two categories of socially important products: eggs of the first and second categories. Over six years (assessment horizon is 2024-2030), the FAS recorded 92.6 billion rubles in lost profits of retailers due to the ban on remuneration. Another 5.7 billion rubles will be needed to renew supply contracts with egg producers. As a result, the total amount that the industry will lose will be 98.3 billion rubles.

The department believes that manufacturers will be able to upgrade and expand production: more products will come to the market, which will lead to a reduction in the cost of the product.

The FAS position was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry believes that this measure will have a positive impact on prices and therefore poultry products will remain accessible to a wide range of consumers.

In 2024, egg prices in Russia decreased by almost 20%, in September – by 0.3%. The selling price of eggs of the first and second category is 73.2 and 58.6 rubles, respectively. Prices are also dropping in retail stores. In April 2024, the FAS carried out inspections at the largest retail chains in several regions: the agency assessed the actions of companies for concluding anti-competitive agreements.
