Gastroenterologist Will Bulsiewicz says scientists have discovered that the gut microbiome changes within 30 minutes of drinking alcohol. That is, the composition of bacteria in the intestines. This is because levels of bacterial endotoxin (a toxin that causes inflammation) begin to rise within half an hour after a person drinks, according to a 2014 study published in PLoS One.
Surprisingly, alcohol directly affects the intestines. A 2024 review published in Alcohol Clinical and Experimental Research confirms this. It showed that regular drinking can change the bacteria in your gut. This leads to digestive problems: diarrhea, irregular bowel movements.
