A similar process led to maturities being reduced from eight years to 13 months in 2020. Apple’s phaseout will reduce the validity of certificates to 200 days by September 2025, 100 days by 2026, and finally to 45 days in 2027.
While this is expected to improve security by limiting the time to exploit vulnerabilities, many system administrators are angry about the increased workload. As certificates expire more frequently, manual updates across hundreds of services can become a logistical nightmare, especially for organizations without automation. As one sysadmin on Reddit put it, “It’s kind of a nightmare… upgrading SSL is an Achilles heel that I have to deal with every 365 days.”
Sectigo, a certificate provider that supports Apple’s offerings, offers automation as a solution. However, some administrators argue that not all systems can be automated, leaving them with the task of frequent manual updates.
