Google will be the first tech giant to use nuclear power plants to power its data centers. The company has reached a deal with startup Kairos Power to buy power from small modular nuclear reactors (SMR), Axios reports.

The agreement aims to power data centers with energy with zero carbon footprint. This energy is especially important for energy-intensive operations related to artificial intelligence, the publication notes.
The project will supply 500 megawatts of electricity to the US grid, with the first reactor scheduled to come online in 2030 and the rest over the next five years. Financial details of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
Google senior director of energy and climate Michael Terrell said the deal complements the company’s more than 115 renewable energy procurement and storage agreements, totaling more than 14 gigawatts of capacity.
In July 2024, Google was in talks to buy Israeli cyber company Wiz for $23 billion, which could become the tech giant’s biggest deal. However, Wiz rejected the offer, citing antitrust risks and investor concerns.
