Lazurenko said that marshmallows contain sugar alcohol – sweetener maltitol (maltitol, E965). The substance itself is not dangerous to humans, but in case of violation of storage or formulation the product may be damaged.

Maltitol is often used as a sweetener because it has a lower glycemic index and fewer calories, so it is considered more harmless for people with impaired carbohydrate metabolism, diabetes and obesity. But the “side” is still present – a strong laxative effect.

This sweetener causes rapid excretion of intestinal contents, bloating and has a negative effect on the intestinal microflora.

Regarding marshmallow poisoning, the doctor noted that most likely the cause lies either in overeating – maltitol is not as sweet as sucrose and therefore you want more, or in a change made in the recipe by the manufacturer.
