Google Home will have its own widget to make it easier to manage smart devices in your home. The plugin places device control directly on the home screen, remove access to the application.

When adding the new widget, you have to choose between automatically syncing all your favorite devices or creating a custom list. Initially, it takes up a significant amount of space in the screen grid, but once added it can be resized almost at will.

Unlike the control accessible from the Notification Tray, the Google Home widget is simpler: Allows you to turn simple devices on/off (lamps and smart TVs) with one touch and provides shortcuts to manage complex devices (e.g. thermostat, cameras and routers).

Once you add shortcuts to the home screen, you can edit them at any time by touching and holding the widget.

According to Google, the widget may take longer to respond to user commands.

The widget significantly simplifies smart home management, but this is not interesting for every type of device. More sensitive control devices (garage doors, cameras and other “fine actions”) requires different levels of authentication.

According to the 9to5Google website, the new feature is available in version 3.24 of Google Home (compatible with all mobile phones with Android 12 or newer). On iOS, the new feature is exclusive to testers with iPhones running iOS 17 or iOS 18.

The new widget needs to be rolled out gradually to all users, but it’s always worth checking the Play Store for any pending updates for the app.
