According to Roskachestvo, fruit or apple puree, egg white, sugar (or its substitutes, or honey) are used in the production of marshmallows, as well as structure-forming components and food additives permitted in Russia. All ingredients must appear on the label.
“It is impossible to say with certainty that the cause of poisoning is maltitol, since according to publicly available information it does not cause such symptoms, perhaps this is just a coincidence,” said Liliya Kotelnikova, director of the Roskachestvo research department.
Maltitol is approved for use in Russia in products with reduced calorie content, without quantitative restrictions. However, eating marshmallows, like any product, can cause a reaction in people with individual characteristics of the organism. “In any case, investigations will be carried out on maltitol. We will announce the results,” Kotelnikova assured.
- In early October, information appeared in the media about mass poisoning with marshmallows purchased in the VkusVill chain. The company denied the reports and temporarily removed the marshmallows from shelves and online sales.
- A few days later, X5 Group also removed marshmallows with maltitol from sale in Pyaterochka and Perekrestok stores and on the Vprok.ru platform. This happened after customers complained of poisoning from Giselle marshmallows.
- Boris Feldman, Director of Legal Affairs of the online service DestraLegal.ru, said that injured buyers from Vkusville and Pyaterochka can count on compensation from 100 thousand to 2 million rubles.
