The agency is seeking innovative solutions to recycle waste from long-duration lunar missions to increase the sustainability of space programs.

The competition is divided into two stages. In the first, which ends on March 31, 2025, teams must propose both physical equipment and virtual prototypes for recycling.

Winners will receive $600,000 for the best physical design and $400,000 for the best digital twin.

The second phase involves creating a working prototype, for which a grand prize of $1.4 million is awarded.

NASA hopes the teams’ solutions will help not only in space, but also on Earth by improving recycling technologies and reducing harmful impacts on the environment.
