“In scarcity regions, mining should be prohibited during the scarcity period. In the regions where we have subsidized electricity, where we have regulated contract zones, mining should not be connected to the electrical grid under these regulated contracts and subsidized prices,” the vice minister emphasized.

He added that the department is also calling for abolishing non-discriminatory access to electricity for miners and encouraging them to switch to their own generation.

Mining creates unpredictable loads on the energy system, leading to the need to build additional generation facilities, which in turn leads to an upward revision of tariffs, Grabchak warned. “This is wrong and the new law passed by the State Duma, which allows the government to limit mining in certain regions, will help solve this problem,” he said.

Starting November 1, 2024, cryptocurrency mining will be legalized in Russia. The corresponding law was signed by Vladimir Putin in August. Individual entrepreneurs, legal entities and individuals will be able to mine cryptocurrencies in Russia.

Previously, the president highlighted the importance of control over cryptocurrency mining, noting that this process consumes a large amount of electricity, which could cause shortages in several regions, especially in businesses, housing and communal services.
