Apple has allocated $1.1 billion to GlobalStar, which manages satellite communications on the iPhone.
This money will be used to expand coverage, including the launch of a new satellite.
In addition, Apple also received a 20% stake in GlobalStar, which owns $400 million.
Apple last publicly invested in GlobalStar in 2022, giving the company $450 million. Apple also provided loans to GlobalStar. It is unknown how much Apple’s satellite communications ended up costing.
iPhone owners can still use it for free, although Apple initially said the free period would last for two years. It is noted that iPhone 14 owners will already have to pay for the service. But last year, Apple extended the free period until September 2025. [9to5Mac]
