The study included 50 licensed U.S. physicians practicing in family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. Using GPT-4 as a diagnostic aid has not been found to significantly improve clinical judgment compared to traditional sources.
Although GPT-4 performed significantly better at diagnosing than doctors using traditional online sources, adding GPT-4 to the diagnostic process did not produce a noticeable improvement. This demonstrates the difficulty of integrating AI into clinical practice.
An important finding of the research is the need to further explore the possibilities of collaboration between doctors and AI to improve the quality of care. There is also a need to investigate how clinicians can best be trained to use these tools.
In response to these challenges, the four organizations created a two-way AI evaluation network, known as ARiSE, to further evaluate the implications of generative AI in healthcare.
