It was reported that GlobalFoundries sent semiconductor plates worth more than $17 million to the Chinese company SJ Semiconductor, which was included in the sanctions list in 2020. From February 2021 to October 2022, 74 shipments could not be detected “due to an error in the GlobalFoundries compliance system.”
SJ Semiconductor’s inclusion on the US “sanctions list” requires US companies to obtain a special license to export technology. Although GlobalFoundries self-reported the incident and cooperated with the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) investigation, agency officials stressed the importance of “extreme caution” when dealing with Chinese companies. This penalty is particularly notable because GlobalFoundries received $3.1 billion in funds from the CHIPS Act to expand semiconductor manufacturing in the United States.
