“After more than two and a half years of investigation, the investigation could not prove the crimes attributed to Usmanov, nor the main points of the accusation, including the money laundering itself,” Interfax quotes Usmanov’s defense.
The billionaire’s defenders, Uwe Lehmbruck and Markus Gotzens, point out that the termination of the investigation creates a “definitive and irrevocable procedural obstacle”, so German investigative authorities can no longer pursue the Russian businessman.
The investigation into Usmanov began in June 2022. In the autumn of the same year, large-scale searches were carried out in several cities in Germany.
In May 2023, the Frankfurt Regional Court ruled that the search warrants were illegal and that there was no initial suspicion. In October 2023, the court decided to return all confiscated property to its owners.
According to the lawyers, Usmanov decided to make a voluntary charitable donation. In addition, the billionaire decided to “refuse to continue the judicial prosecution of prosecutors” and a claim for damages caused by the investigation.
