The feature was called “Idle Reset”; the American corporation did not officially announce its launch. This option makes hacking the device almost impossible.
A similar feature called hibernation mode already exists on Mac computers and is used to maintain data integrity if the computer loses power while the device is in sleep mode.
In the case of the iPhone, a forced restart of the device makes it difficult to access the phone’s data by cracking the password, for example, through brute force (sequential password search), Forbes notes.
At the same time, the reboot timer does not depend on the presence or absence of a network connection: the smartphone will reboot itself if it has not been unlocked after 96 hours.
9to5Mac notes that iPhones suddenly restarting have become a problem for US police, who have used data from the devices as evidence in investigations.
According to Matthew Green, a cryptographer at 404 Johns Hopkins University, the new feature is primarily intended to protect the personal data and security of users whose phones have been stolen.
