Alfa Romeo aims to sell only electric vehicles by 2027.

Alfa Romeo is now part of Stellantis (a multinational car manufacturing corporation), so it now has the platforms and support to achieve full electrification of its lineup. That will happen in just five years, according to a new report. The Italian automaker will offer a model called the Giulia, a sleek electric sedan that will presumably also have decent range (competitor Lucid).

AutoExpress asked Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato about the Giulia and he confirmed that:

Alfa Romeo has a future for the Giulia and also for SUVs because now we are working with China and the US, but the shape of the Giulia is fantastic, I don’t want to lose it. The car is absolutely great, so this type of car has a future, but this future will be electrified. This means a 100% complete BEV for Alfa Romeo.

The current Giulia (pictured above) debuted in 2016, was refreshed in 2020, and after being phased out, there’s likely to be a hiatus until the electric car arrives. It could stay in production until around 2027, but it’s unlikely to stay in the lineup for long enough that Alfa Romeo is able or willing to launch new electrified variants.

Jean-Philippe Imparato also mentions that:

I have to make some important decisions. If I want to perform above average, I have to be bold. I would very much like Alfa Romeo to have the slogan “Light is the right thing to do”. Even if I have a lot of batteries behind me, I want to convey the idea of lightness. This is the foundation of Alfa Romeo and we are building this new line around it. But that’s not enough: we’re working on the atmosphere you’ll feel when you drive an Alfa Romeo in 2025.

Apparently the Giulia EV will have a very impressive range, thanks to battery packs that will reportedly have a capacity of 101kWh to 118kWh, providing a range of at least 800km. Having an 800-volt architecture is also a possibility, given that Alfa Romeo’s CEO said that a fast charge would only take 20 minutes.

All of this also means that the recently unveiled Tonale crossover model, the first electric car in Alfa’s history, will last exactly five years, giving way to an electric car in 2027. Previous reports have indicated that Alfa Romeo’s flagship car will be an SUV. larger instead of the Giulia, although both are likely to be built on the same Stellaantis STLA Large architecture; The Tonale EV replacement will likely use STLA Medium.
