“Natural melatonin levels rise approximately two hours before bedtime,” Thomas Michael Kilkenny, director of the Sleep Medicine Institute at Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, told Verywell in an email. Perhaps this is why dosage matching the natural increase in melatonin is so important.
The doctor also added that melatonin only provides temporary relief to people with sleep problems. However, those with chronic insomnia (those who have difficulty falling asleep at least three times a week for three months) are unlikely to benefit from this substance.
The study also suggests that melatonin works better in healthy people who don’t suffer from insomnia.
Some people may experience nausea, dizziness, headaches, and daytime sleepiness while taking melatonin. It may also interact with some medications, such as warfarin and anticonvulsants.
