NLRB Chairman Lauren McFerran said the purpose of the decision was to protect workers’ rights “to make free and informed decisions regarding union representation.” He explained that forcing employees to attend such meetings under threat of disciplinary action or dismissal “undermines the principle of free choice.”

The decision prohibits employers from making attendance at union meetings mandatory, while providing that employees have the right to refuse to attend without consequences. It is also stated that employers can only express their stance on union issues in an unobtrusive manner.

Although this decision concerns Amazon, it may also set a precedent for other large technology companies with similar practices.
