A research team led by Professor Im Doo-jung and Professor Namhoon Kim from UNIST University has presented a system for remote monitoring of small nuclear reactors. This system uses fiber optic sensors that constantly monitor the status of reactor components and immediately report any abnormalities.

The innovation is the use of 3D printing technology together with artificial intelligence to process data received from sensors. The team successfully used Directed Energy Deposition (DED) to produce smart components by integrating fiber optic sensors into them. This ensured stable operation under the extreme conditions typical of nuclear reactors.

The system analyzes data in real time, tracking thermal deformation and other important parameters. Operators can remotely monitor the reactor’s status via an augmented reality interface, allowing them to quickly respond to any deviations.
