Google will temporarily stop showing news from European media in search results. The company, which is facing pressure from EU regulators, wants to figure out how this will affect traffic and user experience, Google said in a blog post.

It notes that the experiment will affect only 1% of users in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. In addition to search results, materials from European publishers will disappear from the Discover recommendation service and Google News.
The test comes as EU regulators and publishers have asked Google for “additional data” on the effect of news content in search results on how users interact with the company’s products, the blog said. News from sources outside the EU will be displayed unchanged.
A small experiment could have important consequences: based on its results, Google will understand its users’ interest in news, notes The Verge. For several years, the company has opposed laws that would require it to compensate publishers for content.
The 2019 EU Digital Single Market Copyright Directive forced Google to license content from hundreds of publishers in the region. Earlier this year, France ordered Google to pay 250 million euros, accusing the company of violating an agreement to compensate publishers.
