On November 5, VK registered the domains opensourcevk.ru and vkopensource.ru, as follows from Whois.ru data. This is due to the fact that the holding company intends to actively develop software based on open source code, a source close to the company told Forbes. According to him, the official announcement will be before the end of the year.

VK is expected to publish complete IT systems and products, developer tools and libraries, as well as artificial intelligence models in open source format, the publication writes.

According to him, the company plans to publish its developments on GitHub and, possibly, on the Russian Git platforms (decentralized services for joint development of open source projects), providing detailed documentation. The opensourcevk.ru and vkopensource.ru domains will be used to post links to the code, the source noted.

The cost of creating such projects from scratch can amount to “tens of millions of rubles, as well as hundreds and thousands of hours of work by programmers and engineers,” a source close to VK told Forbes. However, open source code “will increase the trust of users and partners” and “will be able to attract talented developers and specialists to the company,” he said.

The VK press service, in response to a request from RB.RU, did not confirm or deny information about plans to publish its developments in open source format.
