“I consider it necessary to introduce mandatory measures to inform users via instant messengers, the most popular of which are Yandex.Messenger, VK Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber, about new fraud methods,” the senator noted.
According to Sheikin, such notification should be done in two ways: when installing the application for the first time, the user should be shown the most common methods of Internet fraud and then notified monthly about the attackers’ new strategies. This will help users “be more attentive when exchanging messages,” explained the parliamentarian.
He added that the number of crimes committed through instant messaging has doubled in a year, and one in seven cybercrimes occurs through social networks, where “there is an increase in the number of publications of extremist and terrorist content.”
Previously, the head of the cybercrime investigation department of the Investigative Committee, Konstantin Komarda, stated that the number of crimes committed using instant messengers has almost doubled compared to 2023. “3,072 such cases have been registered. The messengers “They are used, as a general rule, for communication between members of an organized criminal group within the framework of the commission of a crime, as well as for the commission of crimes related to drug trafficking,” he indicated.
