In Europe and parts of Asia, electric cargo bikes are fast becoming an alternative to cars when it comes to urban commuting. Cargo bikes themselves have come a long way in terms of design and manufacturers have become more resourceful when it comes to practicality and utility. We’ve seen some of the weirdest and coolest electric bike designs out there, and the new Maniac and Sane cargo electric bikes from Germany are definitely at the top of that list.

The Maniac and Sane electric cargo bikes are the brainchild of German inventor Martin Fleischauer, who focused on two key elements when designing these electric bikes: light weight and ease of use. Maniac and Sane seem to have slightly different purposes.

For starters, the Maniac is the lighter of the two, featuring a carbon fiber frame and weighing just 12.8kg. It also has a load capacity of up to 200 kg. The manufacturer claims that the bike is dynamic and agile, with driving characteristics similar to those of a road bike. Of course, this may be hard to believe, given the unique design of the motorcycle’s front end.

But the Sane model is a little heavier: 22.8 kg. However, it is more powerful as it is equipped with a Neodrives Z20 rear motor with a power output of 40 Nm. In addition, its 626 Wh V8 battery promises greater autonomy. The Sane has a top speed of 25 km/h and the same 200 kg payload as the Maniac. In general, Sane was designed to serve a more utilitarian purpose, unlike Maniac, which is primarily designed with ease of use in mind.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering exactly how the weird front end of a bike works. Obviously adding some sort of mechanical link from the handlebars to the front is going to add a lot of weight. To prevent this, both Maniac and Sane use a unique power steering system where the rotation of the front end exactly matches the rotation of the rider on the handlebars. This allows you to load your load between the front wheel and the handlebars and keep it very low, keeping the bike stable at both low and high speeds.

Naturally, such equipment is not cheap, and Maniac and Sane are quite expensive. For starters, the Maniac retails for an MSRP of $10,575. A more powerful version of Sane costs $12,700. Both models are open for order on the official Maniac and Sane website.
