The nuclear power plant, called Natrium, is designed by the TerraPower company, which was founded by Gates in 2008. In a recent blog post, Gates announced that Natrium, expected to open around 2030, will be “the world’s most advanced nuclear facility” with enhanced safety and significantly less waste than conventional reactors.
One of the key aspects of the project is the possibility of creating jobs for the local population. Gates said the new factory will employ between 200 and 250 people, and that the recently closed coal-fired power plant will employ workers with skills suited to many jobs. They will be able to run turbines and maintain connection to the electrical grid without long retraining.
He praised the TerraPower digital design process, which uses supercomputers to simulate various scenarios that ensure the stability and security of the Natrium station.
