Copilot’s functionality is based on indexing a company’s internal data, similar to a search engine’s Web Crawler. This allows features like creating presentations and searching product data, but also introduces security vulnerabilities. In some cases, employees unintentionally gained access to sensitive files due to poorly configured access controls.

The company emphasized that data management challenges began before the advent of artificial intelligence, but noted that the implementation of Copilot makes “proactive management of sensitive information more relevant.”
