“We are already thinking about growing bananas. I was in Kazakhstan last week. Kazakhstan began growing bananas in greenhouses. I don’t know, maybe we’ll get to this too. I don’t know why yet. Until now, Ecuadorian bananas are cheaper. But everything is changing,” said the minister.
In Kazakhstan, banana cultivation began in 2023 with the opening of a 5.3-hectare greenhouse by the Turkish company Gengroup Qazaqstan, capable of producing 1,000 tons of bananas per year. 4 million dollars were invested in the project. Since 2023, bananas have been grown in greenhouses in Uzbekistan.
Ecuador remains the supplier of around 90% of Russia’s bananas. In 2023, the country supplied bananas to Russia worth $680 million, Infoline Analytics CEO Mikhail Burmistrov told Vedomosti. In 2024, Rosselkhoznadzor temporarily suspended the supply of bananas from Ecuador due to the discovery of a polyphagous humpback fly carrying cholera. The restrictions were lifted that same month.
Currently in Russia, bananas are grown on a small scale in the Ufa lemon garden and in the botanical garden of Tver State University. According to the director of the botanical garden, Yuri Naumtsev, growing bananas in southern Russia is possible if appropriate agricultural technology is available.
