The 7,800-ton submarine, equipped with 25 torpedoes and 12 cruise missiles, became the first Virginia-class ship to be deployed in Guam, increasing the number of fast attack submarines in the region to five.
Guam’s proximity to the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea makes it an “ideal base” for US naval power, although it remains vulnerable to Chinese ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, China is rapidly building up its naval forces, including a growing fleet of nuclear submarines.
