The Central Bank presented new variants of images for the back of the thousand ruble bill. This was announced by the president of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, at a press conference, RBC reports. The issuance of the previous banknote was suspended a year ago after complaints from representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church (RDC).

In total, the Central Bank showed 40 variants of images, of which 25 were selected, which will be put to online voting by Russians. Among the favorites are the building of the Vyatka Art Museum in Kirov, the main building of the Kazan Federal University, the Farmers’ Palace in Kazan and the house-monument to IA Goncharov in Ulyanovsk.
According to Nabiullina, these and other objects were selected “based on the recommendations of regional expert groups” and taking into account the assessments of the members of the advisory board. Before the national vote, the images will go through another stage of discussion among experts. The front side of the banknote will remain the same: with images of Nizhny Novgorod.
The Central Bank issued an updated thousandth banknote dedicated to the Volga Federal District in October 2023, but suspended its issuance that same month to finalize the design. It was criticized by representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, who did not like the fact that on the reverse side of the dome of the former palace church there was no Christian cross.
Now this building houses the State History Museum of the Tatar People and Tatarstan. The main specialist of this institution, Lilia Khairutdinova, told the Telegram channel “Rise” that the cross from the dome of the palace church was removed with the arrival of Soviet power.
