After a brain injury such as a concussion, secondary damage may occur due to swelling of the brain. Biomarkers in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid are used to monitor the condition. However, existing methods cannot always track multiple markers simultaneously. The new system solves this problem.

Scientists have developed a fiber optic sensor that monitors temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen, glucose, sodium, and calcium concentrations. To do this, they equipped the fibers with fluorescent tips that were sensitive to each of the markers. A special multiwavelength laser was used to monitor changes in brightness indicating interaction with biomarkers.

The system has been tested and shown to be accurate in analyzing biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid.
