Others were concerned about damage to OpenAI’s reputation. OpenAI executives defended the partnership, saying the technology will “support defense systems and protect American lives.”

Company executives argued that “democratically elected governments” should have access to advanced AI because “authoritarian regimes are seeking military AI.” But company employees objected that the United States itself has repeatedly provided weapons to “authoritarian allies.”
