A satellite Internet project similar to Elon Musk’s Starlink will be launched in Russia at the end of 2030. This was stated by the general director of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, in an interview with RBC.

“2030 is guaranteed. Maybe in 2028, 2029,” said the head of the state corporation, answering the corresponding question.

Borisov stressed that Russian companies do not have “the goal in themselves to pursue and achieve some kind of record” in the development of satellite Internet, but rather have the task of ensuring quality by providing “the minimum required volume of services in the interest of the economy, defense and security.”

Now Bureau 1440, part of ICS Holding, is implementing a project similar to Starlink. The company’s satellite system, located in low orbits, will provide broadband Internet access services. It will be complemented by the Skif group in medium orbits, Borisov said.

The director of Roscosmos noted that other private companies also participate in Russian satellite Internet projects, but in order to fully enter the market, “it is necessary to develop and nurture them.”

The creation of the Bureau 1440 low-orbit satellite constellation will cost approximately 445 billion rubles, RBC wrote in September, citing the Internet access infrastructure project, which was developed as part of the Data Economy program. With this money, it is planned to launch 383 satellites until the end of 2030, of which 292 will be in constant operation.

The company itself is expected to allocate more than 329 billion rubles to the implementation of the project. It will receive another 116 billion rubles in the form of government support: preferential loans and subsidies for launching rockets, creating satellites and putting them into orbit. The “Russian Starlink” project should increase Internet coverage in Russia to 99%.
