Google introduced the Willow quantum processor, which is currently not in the world.
He learned to solve a computational problem in less than five minutes, while the Frontier supercomputer (one of the most powerful in the world) took 10 septillion years to do this, which significantly increased the age of the Universe. If you write this number down, it will look like this: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
The new chip represents a Western leap based on Google’s quantum processor introduced in 2019. Then, five years ago, the processor was able to complete a calculation in 200 seconds, which took the world’s most powerful supercomputer approximately 10 thousand years.
In addition to its impressive performance, Willow solves another important problem: it reduces errors as it scales. According to Google, scientists from around the world have been unable to solve this problem for the past 30 years.
Google’s next goal is to perform the first “useful, out-of-the-box” computation that is also “application-first” and cannot be recovered by conventional computers.
According to Hartmut Neven, the project leader, quantum processors could be used to train artificial intelligence, develop new drugs, create more energy-efficient batteries for electric vehicles, as well as speed up progress in nuclear fusion and the search for alternative energy sources.
