Google has introduced a new operating system, Android XR, designed for reality helmets and smart glasses.

The company has so far revealed few details about Android XR. It is known that Google has optimized the Google Maps, Photos and YouTube applications for virtual reality. An experimental version of the Google Chrome browser with support for multi-window mode in VR is also being developed.

An API has been provided for developers, permission to place applications for Android XR on Google Play.

The operating system includes generative AI Gemini, which has learned to see and hear user actions, analyze incoming data and offer hints. According to Google, Android XR is the first OS built from the ground up using Gemini.

During development, Google collaborated with Samsung and other device manufacturers. Android XR is already available to developers, the first device will be released in 2025. This will be a Samsung reality helmet.


Samsung Muhan Project

Currently, developers have access to Samsung Project Moohan smart glasses with a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and a beta version of Android XR. They are intended for application implementation only and will not be available for retail sale. [The Verge]
