In some people, anxiety symptoms increase as the sun sets. However, this type of anxiety is not a medical diagnosis. This can make it difficult for people to understand why they feel the way they do.

Sunset anxiety typically affects those who are prone to anxiety, sensitive to daily changes in light or loss, and very aware of their emotions, notes Gail Saltz, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Weill-Cornell School of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The evening can also be a time when our minds calm down after a stressful job or a hard day. Anxiety can arise at times like these, too, says Thea Gallagher, PhD, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.

Another cause of evening anxiety is the presence of young children. Evening means preparing for the most difficult part of the day – preparing dinner, taking a bath, going to bed, waking up at night.
