The laser neuron overcomes the limitations of previous photonic neurons, such as low speed and data loss. The system, which uses quantum dot lasers and high-speed radio frequency substrates, provides faster and more efficient operation. This could improve AI decision-making in time-critical tasks while reducing power consumption, according to lead researcher Chaoran Huang.
The team tested the laser neuron in a reservoir computing system, a network that processes serial data useful for recognizing speech or predicting weather conditions. It showed high accuracy by detecting irregular heartbeats at a rate of 98.4%.
Huang added that a single laser neuron can function as a small neural network. Integrating multiple neurons can unlock even greater potential, similar to the interconnected networks of the brain.
