Julea was arrested in Cluj, Romania, in July 2023 and extradited to the United States. He was ordered to forfeit $21.5 million as well as shares in his Indonesian resort business. He must also pay approximately $15 million in “damages.”

Active since 2019, the NetWalker ransomware group has targeted numerous organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic, including hospitals and universities. Victims include the Argentine immigration office and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which paid a ransom of $1.14 million.
