“Little by little, the appearance of the Russian video game console is emerging, the creation of which is in charge of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce at the request of the president. According to the minutes of the meeting of the specialized working group, it will be based on the Elbrus processor and other electronic components of Russian production. The operating system will also be national, but the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has not yet chosen between Aurora and Alt Linux,” the deputy wrote.

According to him, Elbrus processors have not yet reached the level of development that would allow the Russian console to compete with the popular PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles. Therefore, Skolkovo, which is developing the concept and competitive advantages of the domestic set-top box, will have to “come up with something truly innovative,” Gorelkin noted.

He added that the goal of creating a Russian console was not to “port a hundred old games there.”

“This platform should mainly serve to promote and popularize national video game products, expanding its audience beyond PC and mobile games,” the deputy concluded.

Vladimir Putin instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to consider the issue of organizing Russian production of video game consoles and consoles at the end of March 2024. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, which produce the PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles, suspended their operations in Russia in March 2022.
