Apple had to postpone the presentation of the foldable iPad. Initially they wanted to release it in 2028, now the release is planned for 2029 or even later.
The company faced a number of engineering challenges that impacted the device’s weight, appearance, and aesthetics.
Future iPads will feature an 18-inch flexible screen with a discreet fold. Apple is developing it together with Samsung. There will be no external monitor.
When closed, the device will be visible on a laptop with an aluminum case, and when open it will be the size of a 13-inch laptop.
Test assemblies of the foldable iPad weigh 1.6 kg, which is similar to the weight of the MacBook Pro, but not the iPad Pro weighing 500-600 grams.
The development of a flexible screen turned out to be compact and expensive. The foldable iPad is expected to be three times more expensive than the 13-inch iPad Pro unless component prices come down. Considering that the iPad Pro costs $1,300, the folding iPad could cost $3,900 (~317 thousand rubles). [Bloomberg]
