Pay attention to your pet’s body language. When a cat blinks slowly, it shows that it is feeling good. Cats dissatisfied with something freeze, move away, flatten their ears, hiss or scratch and bite. If your pet is coming towards you with its tail raised, this is a sign of a friendly mood, but if the cat is wagging its tail from side to side, it means that it is angry. If you’re not sure if your fur baby likes you to pet him or not, stop doing it. If your pet is rubbing against you, this is a sign that he wants you to continue.
Give your cat a healthy environment. The American Association of Feline Practitioners and the International Feline Medical Association have identified five principles for a healthy cat environment. This is having a safe place to hide when they are scared; food, water, toilets, scratching posts, playgrounds, rest and sleeping areas; opportunity to play and display predatory behavior; Positive, consistent, and predictable human-cat interactions (respect your pet’s choice about how they want to behave); Respecting the cat’s feelings by avoiding unwanted stimuli (strong smells and loud sounds) and providing necessary sensory stimulation (using catnip or silver vine).
Clean the tray. Poor litter box hygiene puts your cat at risk of developing urinary problems that can be life-threatening. If you change the type of litter, do so gradually so your pet has time to get used to it.
Check for tension between cats in the house. Many cats prefer to be the only person at home. Signs of tension between animals include prolonged staring, blocking the way to the door or tray. This can cause chronic fear, anxiety, and stress-related illnesses in cats.
Keep cats and other animals safe. Ideally, they should not be allowed to run loose in areas where they could harm wildlife.
