But recent research has revealed unusual sexual interactions between the two species. Scientists first noticed this behavior in 2015 on the island of Yakushima, where male macaques were trying to mate with female deer. Further research revealed that adolescent female monkeys also rode deer, perhaps as a way of “exploring their sexuality” or “training for future mating.”
Researchers think this behavior may be due to mate deprivation or simply “sexual exploration,” which is a safer “alternative” in an environment with aggressive male macaques. Some scientists even believe that such an interaction could be the beginning of a new behavioral tradition.
