A unique “mass spectrometric nose” has been developed in the Russian laboratory of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which can determine its quality, grade and even detect fake tea by the smell of tea. According to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, this method of analysis is several times faster than traditional ones and allows you to obtain results in just a few seconds or minutes.
According to the head of the laboratory, Alexander Grechnikov, the new development allows you to instantly determine how good the tea is, its type and variety. To do this, you do not need to have special knowledge, unlike traditional methods that require lengthy analyzes with sample preparation and chromatographic procedures. The system is based on the ionization of molecules that determine the scent of tea, allowing the mass spectrometer to identify desired compounds.
The analysis is simple: The tea is placed in a test tube and after a few seconds or minutes the system produces results as volatile substances are ionized and detected. To ensure accuracy, the “mass spectrometric nose” is pre-trained using modern machine learning methods by analyzing tea samples with known properties. The developed method quickly and accurately identifies not only fake products, but also low-quality products, creating new opportunities for quality control of tea and other biological objects.
