The agreement, which is planned to be signed for five years, has already received approval from the Italian intelligence services and the Ministry of Defense. As part of the agreement, SpaceX will provide Italy with highly encrypted communications services, including telephone and Internet services for government needs. The project also includes providing cellular communication via satellite in emergencies such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Although the negotiations were to start in 2023, they took a break for a while but resumed after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to the USA. Italian officials have expressed concerns about the impact of such a contract on local telecom operators, but overall the project continues to move forward.
