In the study published in the journal Nature Communications, a metabolite called MEcPP was examined. In plants, this molecule helps receive the stress signal. Researchers have found that it also disrupts biofilm formation in bacteria such as E. coli, inhibiting their ability to attach to surfaces.
Biofilms form when bacteria use fimbriae, hair-like structures, to attach to surfaces. MEcPP increases the activity of a gene called fimE, which turns off fimbriae production. Without fimbriae, bacteria cannot form biofilms, making them more vulnerable to antibiotics and cleaning.
