With the announcement of DLSS 4 at CES 2025, Nvidia had already confirmed that the new technology would be compatible with the GeForce RTX 40, and Jacob Freeman, an employee of the company, confirmed the Frame Generation improvements with a 10% performance increase. The post on X (formerly Twitter) also explained that the feature uses less VRAM when processing images.

During the feature reveal, the company promised that DLSS 4 would arrive in the RTX 40 generation but did not provide many details. Freeman shared the same content shown by Nvidia, but now confirmed that DLSS 4’s Frame Generation will also be improved for these cards, reiterating the additional performance improvement of up to 10%.

A quick test on Warhammer 40,000: Darktide shows a jump from 124 frames to 137 frames, and while 10% isn’t very noticeable when playing at that frame rate, the new DLSS update is free.

More FPS, less VRAM consumption

However, one of the most interesting aspects of this comparison is the decrease in memory levels. While the game consumes 9 GB of VRAM memory with DLSS 3 and Frame Generation, the new application reduces this consumption by 400 MB, reducing the overall usage to 8.6 GB.

Although 400 MB may seem less small, this reduction can greatly help entry-level or mezzanine card users with 6 or 8 GB of memory. Over the years, games have required cards with more VRAM for realistic high-resolution textures.

It’s worth remembering that this DLSS 4 for the RTX 40 only improves on the original Frame Generation, but does not include the new Multi-Frame Generation, which can deliver significant jumps in FPS and is exclusive to the RTX 50. 4 of the first games offered with DLSS will be available starting January 30.
