The spectrograph will enhance Subaru’s ability to observe distant light sources by capturing light in both visible and some near-infrared wavelengths. Professor Naoyuki Tamura of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan shared that this achievement is an important step towards achieving long-term scientific goals and involving the local Hawaiian community in the telescope’s discoveries.

Over the next five years, the spectrograph will be used for a large-scale survey of the sky, collecting more than 360 nights of data on millions of galaxies and stars, including the Milky Way and our neighboring Andromeda galaxy.
